Tim Woolcock was encouraged to paint from an early age and paid regular visits to the Grundy Art Gallery in Blackpool as a teenager. Influenced by artists prominent in the 1950’s, in particular by members of the St Ives School such as William Scott, Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Denis Mitchell. His work features strong pigments and fractured geometric forms that is balanced, characteristiclily, by an equally refined and delicate use of colour.
In this dynamic age of instant media and free global communication via portals such as Instagram and Facebook, the works of great artists are able to traverse the world like wild fire for all to consume.
And it was in this way that I first discovered the paintings of Tim Woolcock.
I remember being instantly struck by the clean cut delineation of pleasing shapes and repeating motifs that make Tim’s work instantly recognisable. From the artists mind, via a very steady hand, a harmony of form, composition and colour meet in symbiotic arrangements that are strangely familiar and equally seem otherworldly.
In this day and age it is a rare talent that can develop a successful style of art that is distinct from the masses of contemporary artist painting in the Modern British abstract tradition. And yet, here it is. Space aged, Zen, calming and harmoniously coordinated.
His particular oeuvre holds its own in our gallery alongside established luminaries from the Modern British canon such as Sandra Blow, Sir Terry Frost, Roger Hilton, Denis Mitchell to name but a few.
In his 70th year, Stow Art House are delighted to dedicate our first one man show to Tim Woolcock, who to my mind is firmly established as a modern master.
We look forward to welcoming you to Stow Art House throughout August and hope you enjoy, savour and even acquire your own original painting by Tim Woolcock.
